Los Angeles, California,
"We will either find a way, or make one"– Hannibal
Pauline M. Martin has more than 11 years of litigation experience and handles all areas family law as well as a range of other practice areas including general commercial litigation, employment and partnership disputes, and insurance coverage and contract litigation.
Prior to joining Phillips Lerner, Ms. Martin co-founded Sonoma Risk Insurance Agency, LLC in Los Angeles, where she helped develop the patent-pending insurance product, "Contract Litigation Insurance" (CLI), which covers the risk of paying an adversary's attorneys' fees in a contract dispute. CLI was hailed by the legal community as a "game changer" in contract litigation.
Ms. Martin’s litigation experience stems from her 11 years of practice at Los Angeles-based boutique litigation firm Alschuler Grossman Stein & Kahan, and later Bingham McCutchen LLP, where she handled commercial litigation matters as an associate and was later elevated to an equity partner. Working as an associate, Ms. Martin gained extensive experience, in the war room and the court room, preparing complaints and responsive pleadings, handling large scale discovery and document productions, arguing motions before the court, and preparing for and participating in trials and arbitrations. As a partner, she managed all phases of litigation in state and federal courts, as well as all forms of alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
Ms. Martin's commercial litigation experience, particularly in partnership dissolution and employment-related matters, provides a unique perspective to her family law practice at Phillips Lerner. According to Ms. Martin, regardless of civil or family law, clients rely on their attorneys to provide sound advice, creative thinking, and strong representation through a critical separation or dissolution of one kind or another. In both civil and family law, agreements exist that affect the rights and obligations of the parties. Important promises are made whether by a spouse, an employer, or a joint venture partner. Through the course of the relationship, there may be resulting breaches by one or more parties. Ultimately, when the parties cannot reconcile or settle their differences peacefully, there is a formal desire to part ways, and litigation becomes necessary. Whether in a civil or family dispute, the potential impact of litigation on the parties' finances, businesses, personal and professional reputations, and resources are equally serious.
Ms. Martin was included on the list of Southern California Super Lawyers "Rising Stars" from 2005 to 2007.
Ms. Martin received her Juris Doctorate from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law, where she was selected as an Editor of the UCLA Law Review. She also was a member of the Moot Court Program, received the Am Jur Award for the highest grade in Criminal Law, and served as an Extern for the Honorable David Kenyon (ret.) in the U.S. District Court. Having earned Dual Bachelor's Degrees in Political Science and History from the University of California at Irvine she graduated summa cum laude and magna cum laude, respectively.
Ms. Martin is actively involved in her community, having served as the President of Step up on Second, LLP, Santa Monicas largest non-profit mental health organization. Through her decade- long commitment to Step Up on Second, Ms. Martin assisted in the implementation of large scale housing projects in Santa Monica and Hollywood, which have provided much needed homes to homeless individuals with severe and chronic mental illness.
